Vows

Filed under: Adventures, Images — admin @ 8:24 am

We are back from my sister’s wedding in Richmond , Virginia! And, I bet you didn’t even know we were gone. I had hoped to see Washington DC from the outside of the car and to meet up with the mysterious Liz on this trip but due to circumstances (getting lost a lot, waiting in long lines a lot, fussy kids, etc) we had to simplify some of our plans. Here, though, are the highlights:

Top Ten Memories Making Moments of our trip to Richmond

10) Potomac Mills Outlet Mall

9) L barfs so much on plane ride home it drips under the seat onto the feet of the people behind us

8 ) Driving by various monuments and buildings in Washington DC on our way to Richmond

7) Touring White House of the Confederacy and the Confederate Museum

6) Delicious tiramisu at rehearsal dinner

5) L and A get to spend fun day with my sister and her (soon to be) husband

4) Virginia Museum of Science

3) Maymont Park

2) Sharing a shuttle from the Dollar Rent-a-Car to Dulles Airport with ANTM winner Eva Pigford

1) E and B’s beautiful wedding at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

Parenting

Filed under: Books, Kids, Uncategorized — admin @ 1:00 pm

When I was a pregnant with L and through a lot of her very early childhood, I read a bunch of parenting and pregnancy books. Some were good and most were pretty awful. The good ones were all good in the same way: they were comforting yet honest and didn’t preach a particular approach but offered instead a bunch of creative ideas for dealing with whatever you are dealing with. The awful books were just the opposite. These had rigid ideas on how to do things: how to get your kid to sleep, how to get them to eat, to nap, to get them out of diapers, to discipline them and so on. Books like that are frustrating because it is never going to work out for you exactly as the book promises. Children are individuals after all and so individual approaches to raising them are in order.

A while back I found a most excellent site, Ask Moxie, and I swear this is the first place I go when I start feeling frustrated with say a sleep issue or I want information about babywearing or something. Today Moxie posted her manifesto and it is so excellent and a great reminder for me in general. L is a very intense kid and sometimes I feel like there must be something I can do better to smooth out the bumps for her. That post (and to a greater degree that site), more than all the parenting books I’ve read, sums up what I find to be the most helpful and healthy parenting philosophy.

Speaking of books…while I haven’t spent much time here at CB lately I have been very busy (more on all the craziness soon) but have managed to eek out a couple reviews and things so you can find me here if you want.

Purpose

I have never had occasion to run into a room and, horrified, yell, “What is the meaning of all this?” But it seems like fun and I am going to take the opportunity now. See, as far as this blogging thing goes I keep asking myself, what is the meaning of all this?

As I recently wrote, having taken a blogging hiatus, I have had time to think about what I really want to do with Citizen Beta. When I first started the site, several years ago, it was because I had been emailing friends and family links to things I had written * as well as interesting articles or cool websites I came across. I didn’t want to be one of those people filling up in boxes with crap and I thought with a blog someone could choose to click or not to click without me bugging them. Also, I could put up pictures of my cute kids. I didn’t originally intend to create a personal narrative but I suppose, like other blogs, that is what this has become.

In the month or so that I have been back I have limited myself to two posts per week. One, because that is all the time I have and two, because that is all the ideas I have. I am so busy with parenting and working and writing on deadlines and just trying to get dressed in the morning that blogging really isn’t a priority. But, that being said, I can’t stop. I can’t quit you, Citizen Beta!

So, for today, instead of my thoughts, how about yours? I have some questions for you (is there anyone out there?), things I have been thinking about lately…

  1. How do you prepare a three year old to start preschool? How do you explain she will be on her own there? Are there good books to get her to read before hand?

  2. Is it really sick to think of asking for a new vacuum cleaner for my birthday?

  3. What color shoes should I get to go with the dark green skirt and green/white/brown patterned shirt I am wearing to my sister’s (formal, evening) wedding? Brown?

  4. If you had one afternoon in Washington DC with an infant and a three year old what would you do? Are there any kid friendly museums?

  5. What do you think of this?
  6. The baby is crying…should I go pick her up? Oh, I know the answer to that one: Yes! Happily!

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who commented on my questions about cloth diapering. My article is out and I blame editing it at 1 week postpartum for all the grammatical sloppiness. I was hoping it would be longer and more detailed but my editor needed it a certain length.

Here is a far funnier article than mine on cloth diapers.

Begin

A new dishwasher is being delivered today. I hate to admit that I am all a quiver over the arrival of an appliance, but it is true. And, this is for two reasons. One, we currently don’t have a dishwasher and I figure it will give us an hour or so more a day to play with the girls, or hang-out outside, or read or, most likely watch The Dog Whisperer or America’s Next Top Model. Secondly, the arrival of the dishwasher signals the beginning of the kitchen remodel.

One of the first posts I wrote over 2 years ago was about how I hated my kitchen floors and wanted new ones. The floor right now is covered in cheap, ugly, worn linoleum squares; white with blue diamonds in them. It is oh so very ugly and they get oh so very filthy and they are the only part of the kitchen not being ripped out. Well, that is not true. Basically we are getting new counter tops, sink and cabinets and the dishwasher. We might paint. This process will most likely take all month and will be a bit stressful but will make our house look sooo much nicer. I will post “before” pictures because our cabinets are ugly beyond words.

So, here I sit waiting for delivery, feeling very suburban, despite not living in the suburbs. Maybe home ownership does that to you.

This May will usher in a series of changes for us. Besides the kitchen we are working, finally, on the backyard. But, even more meaningfully, L turned three yesterday (I know lots of bloggers write beautiful birthday letters to their kids but all I can say is she has given me the best three years of my life, without a doubt) and not only did I get rid of the sippy cup lids, but I registered her for preschool. Preschool, holy shit! She is excited about school starting in a month but really pissed off about the sippy cups.

For her birthday she got a great package from her aunt and uncle and cousins and it included a My Little Pony. This was, I think, her first overtly, undeniably girl gift. She has stuffed animals and dolls and a tea set, but I know little boys who play with those, too. She still likes trains and trucks and still wants to be a road engineer when she grows up (no kidding!) but that pony with its rainbow mane and sparkling eyes garnered lots of ohs and ahs and as we sat last night combing its hair she did look quite content and serene.

As for me I am continuing to work from home this summer but instead of designing an online class I will be teaching said class and this is going to be a big challenge for me. I am excited to see how it will work and also excited to have the opportunity to teach, which I love, and be home with my kids, which I love. I am hoping to be content and serene myself.

A few months ago I wrote an article (that involved research and everything) for a local publication that they never used. I was bummed of course but the other day I got word that I will be paid for an even better writing assignment for a publication I usually write for (happily) for free! I am starting to ooze contentment!

So maybe I am not plotzing over the dishwasher because I have turned into a Stepford Wife but because it is a symbol of more positive change here at our house. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the baby is sleeping, yada yada yada. Is that the rumble of a delivery truck I hear..?
